Would be awful in football. Know where it's worse? North Carolina.
In a Family Guy Episode where Louis sees a sign:
North Carolina
First in Flight
48th in Education
Don't you hate it when things are misconstrued so badly on television? Me too. The sign should have read:
North Carolina
First in Flight
I've been upset about this before. All over Facebook. I'm upset. I'm upset because I LOVE my job. I'm upset because I am good at what I do. I'm upset because my pay keeps going down and the demands keep going up.
I didn't go into teaching to make millions, but when I am facing possibly having to switch jobs or get a second one, it's a problem. (And the reason for this little rant.) Oh, and there's talk of taking away the supplement for a Master's Degree. When I moved here, I took a huge pay-cut. But, my husband had been laid off and this is where he found work.
Rumor is merit pay will start in 2014. I get that non-teachers think this is a GREAT idea, but before you jump on that bandwagon, can you at least appreciate the fact that ideas like this may push good teachers out? (Meaning they'd leave on their own.) If the state has no money to pay teachers, how easy is it going to be to receive an acceptable rating? Especially when only a part of your "score" is based on your students? Yep, so even if your score is through the roof, you could still potentially get a poor rating.
Again, I cannot stress this enough--seriously, I LOVE MY JOB. And, look--I even got a shout out at graduation! But, some days I feel like this...
